Call of Duty: World at War Offers Double XP Week to Collector's Edition Owners in December

Nov 26, 2008 12:27pm CST tags: Call of Duty: World at War
Those that bought the PC and Xbox 360 Limited Collector's Editions of Call of Duty: World at War will be able to earn double experience points from online multiplayer from December 5 thought December 12, publisher Activision has announced.

For double XP access, owners must have activated their Limited Collector's Edition. For the PC, this is done automatically as the serial code is entered during installation, with any server offering double XP. Xbox 360 LCE owners will need to play on the "Officer's Club" playlist for double XP, and must have registered on the official site and then downloaded the accompanying token.

Those that purchased the regularly priced edition of the Treyarch-developed shooter are not eligible to participate in the promotion, nor are PlayStation 3 owners, as the PlayStation 3 did not receive a Limited Collector's Edition of the game.

Priced at a $20 premium--$70 on PC and $80 on Xbox 360--the Call of Duty: World at War Limited Collector's Edition promised an exclusive weapon, a week of double experience and a real-life canteen that was not intended for drinking.

Now available at FileShack is the mod toolset for Call of Duty: World at War.

Tucked away within the 1.10GB archive is everything owners of the PC version will need to start making custom content, such as levels and new game modes.

Developed by Treyarch, the wartime shooter hit PC, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 earlier in the month, accompanied by the Rebellion-crafted PS2 version and n-Space's DS edition.

Call of Duty: World at War Invades Steam

Nov 18, 2008 4:39pm CST tags: Call of Duty: World at War, Steam
Valve has announced that the PC version of Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War is now available on the Steam digital distribution service.

The World War II shooter, which is selling like hotcakes, can now be purchased online and downloaded through Steam for the price of $49.95, the same as buying the disc-based game from a brick-and-mortar retailer.

World at War released last week for a whole bevy of platforms. Treyarch handled the PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wiieditions, while the PS2 version came from Rebellion and n-Space handled the Nintendo DS port.

New Call of Duty Doubles CoD4's First Week Sales

Nov 18, 2008 10:25am CST tags: Call of Duty: World at War, Software Sales
Treyarch's wartime shooter Call of Duty: World at War has more than doubled the week-one UK sales of Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4, GamesIndustry reports.

World at War arrived at retailers last week, hitting two more platforms--PS2 and Wii--than Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which was released on PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS. The PS2 edition of CoD:WaW was developed by Rebellion, while n-Space handled the DS editions of both CoD4 and CoD:WaW.

As GamesIndustry and UK sales-tracking firm GfK Chart-Track did not provide a specific per-console breakdown of World at War's sales figures, the effect those additional platforms had on its retail performance is not yet known.

After Infinity Ward created the first two Call of Duty entries, Treyarch was brought on to co-develop the series as part of publisher Activision's "leapfrog strategy" for annual releases. Treyarch handled Call of Duty 3 while IW prepped CoD4, with the series creator presently working on Call of Duty 6 for a 2009 release.

Call of Duty 5 Brings Co-op Zombie Killing into WWII

Oct 27, 2008 12:49pm CST tags: Call of Duty: World at War
The video game zombie invasion continues, as it was revealed over the weekend that Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War (PC, 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, DS) contains an endless zombie-slaughter mode for up to four players.

The mode, which is unlocked by finishing the fifth Call of Duty game releasing November 11, plays like the Horde Mode of Epic's Gears of War 2, but with undead Nazis in the place of more monstrous Locust.

CVG writes that players earn cash by killing zombies, which is then used to purchase weapons and equipment. Zombies respawn endlessly in waves, and reportedly Treyarch themselves have only managed to reach wave 23.

Video of the mode has appeared on GameTrailers, which we've embedded below... Read more

Call of Duty: World at War Gets Open PC Beta

Oct 20, 2008 10:23am CST tags: Call of Duty: World at War
While the recently-launched Xbox 360 multiplayer beta for Call of Duty: World at War is limited to pre-order customers and select others, developer Treyarch has revealed that the forthcoming PC beta will be open to all members of the official site.

"These PC keys will be available to all registered users of CallOfDuty.com, including any new users who sign up after the PC Beta releases," reads a Call of Duty: World at War community update acquired by Voodoo Extreme. "These keys aren't intended to limit the Beta to a certain number of players; they are here to allow you to create these unique profile names for our Friends and Invites features."

Though the update did not specify when the PC beta for the first-person shooter will launch--the full game hits PC, PS2, PS3, 360, Wii and DS on Nov. 11--it did note that the "entire key authentication / master server paradigm is changing."

The shift will tie an individual profile to the CD Key instead of requiring a password and username for online play, making Friends and Invite functionality easier on the PC. "We didn't want the new Squad mechanics we've developed to get watered down on the PC," the studio noted, "which is ultimately why we decided to bring you Friends & Invites, and thus globally unique profile names."

Call of Duty Series Could Return to WWII Again

Oct 16, 2008 6:35pm CST tags: Call of Duty: World at War
Four of the five games in the Call of Duty series, counting Treyarch's now-in-beta World at War (PC, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS), have been set in World War II but there's still room for more antics featuring The Greatest Generation, according to World at War senior producer Noah Heller.

"I can't say that there won't ever be a WWII Call of Duty game again, but ... it's gratifying that we're able to show the close for once, rather than the opening," said Heller to CVG. "The war is over and both campaigns have a very clear ending." World at War takes place in the Pacific and in Berlin.

To make his point, Heller explores some parts of World War II that... Read more

Four Hardcore Wii Game Previews: A Look at The Conduit, MadWorld, Call of Duty 5 and Dead Rising

Oct 06, 2008 10:00pm CST tags: MadWorld, The Conduit, Dead Rising, Call of Duty: World at War, Preview
So we know Nintendo has the market cornered on Wii brain trainers, and walking trainers, and games about collecting bells. But what is there for us, the hardcore gamers? What about the people that dabble in Mario, but want nothing more than to ignore that bell business, kill that obnoxious Tom Nook and take his loot?

Last week I had a chance to preview Nintendo's upcoming Wii lineup at the company's fall media summit. And while the new DS and the handheld platform's strong lineup dominated the news, I was more interested in what Nintendo was showing off on the Wii. After all, my Wii has been dormant for months. I wanted to know whether I should expect four more months of the same, or some real change from Nintendo's platform.

The first-party offerings weren't very inspiring. Animal Crossing: City Folk and Wii Music did little to convince me to start dusting off my Wiimotes. Tetris Party had some intriguing modes, but another Tetris game just isn't going to do it for me.

However, I did get a look at four games from various third-party developers that at least offered some action that didn't involve cooking simulation or Sudoku. So out of those few offerings, do we have anything to look forward to? ... Read more

While Treyarch was provided with the technology that powered Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, project lead Cesar Statsny GameSpot that the studio was "able to achieve this graphical intensity with only a modest bump in the minimum requirements from COD4."

Call of Duty: World at War to See Major DLC Push

Sep 16, 2008 7:30pm CST tags: Call of Duty: World at War, DLC
Update: Treyarch has announced that the Day One Advantage will provide a high-level rifle for pre-orders, or a light machinegun for those purchasing the collector's edition. Outside of the Day One Advantage, the guns will have to be earned via gaining experience in multiplayer.

Original story: Activision is planning a wealth of downloadable content for Treyarch's upcoming shooter Call of Duty: World at War.

According to Activision publishing CEO Mike Griffith, Call of Duty: World at War will be supported by "3x the amount of content" than was supplied for Call of Duty 4, as well as "premium content called 'Day One Advantage.'"

While Activision did not detail the "Day One Advantage," blog Alt+F4 claims the feature will accelerate the earning of experience points during online play.

Only a single map pack was provided for Infinity Ward's wildly popular Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The Variety Map Pack, which sold for 800 Microsoft Points ($10), was downloaded by over one million gamers in nine days, a record for Xbox Live DLC.
