Capcom Considering More Wii Ports; Candidates Include Street Fighter 4, Flock, More

Aug 13, 2008 7:00pm CST tags: Capcom, Street Fighter 4
Publisher Capcom is considering one or more of its in-development properties for release on the Nintendo Wii, corporate officer Christian Svensson revealed on the company's official forums.

Responding to complaints that few of Capcom's efforts on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are also en route to the Wii, Svennson said that "one or two" titles in development at the company's North American-based studio Capcom Entertainment Incorporated are being considered for release on the Wii.

"We'd like to see how they do on their initial target systems before doubling down on additional SKUs," Svennson noted.

While the upcoming fighter sequel Street Fighter IV is internally developed at CEI, the remaining titles—Proper Games' Flock, Certain Affinity's Age of Booty and Airtight Studios' Dark Void—are part of the studio's publishing operations. Lost... Read more

More Dead Rising on the Way, Teases Capcom

Aug 11, 2008 10:37am CST tags: Dead Rising, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, Capcom
As Capcom readies the Wii edition of its zombie-slaying action title Dead Rising (360), the publisher has begun hinting that more Dead Rising titles are on the way, including a possible PlayStation 3 release.

"You haven't seen the last of Dead Rising," Capcom's John Diamonon wrote in the comments section of the official PlayStation blog, responding to a fan's complaint that the original Dead Rising only arrived on Xbox 360.

Left, Dead Rising on Xbox 360. Right, Dead Rising on Wii.

Released in 2006, Dead Rising put players in the role of photojournalist Frank West as he attempted to survive 72 hours in a zombie-infested mall, with the option of rescuing numerous survivors. Rumors of a multi-platform sequel have long circulated, though until now, there has been little evidence to indicate another effort is in development.

Capcom Blames Piracy for Poor DMC4 PC Sales

Aug 01, 2008 10:00pm CST tags: Devil May Cry 4, Capcom, Piracy, PC Gaming
Capcom corporate officer Christian Svensson revealed that the PC edition of the company's demon-slaying action title Devil May Cry 4 (PC, PS3, 360) saw poor sales since it debuted early last month, owing in some part to rampant piracy of the game.

"It's not doing as well as I would like in the US at retail," Svensson wrote on Capcom's official blog. "It's such a good version and it really deserves better sales. I know it's getting pirated to hell and back (it was up on torrents literally the day it shipped)."

The executive added that he had pushed for more prolific digital distribution of Devil May Cry 4's PC incarnation, but was stonewalled by Capcom Japan. Despite the frustration, Svennson reiterated his commitment to bringing more Capcom titles to... Read more

New Marvel vs. Capcom Game Teased

Jul 28, 2008 1:14pm CST tags: Marvel vs. Capcom, Marvel, Capcom
With rival DC Comics pitting its characters against the cast of Mortal Kombat in the upcoming Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (PS3, 360), Marvel has begun teasing a new entry in the fan-favorite Marvel vs. Capcom fighting series.

"Yes [a new Marvel vs. Capcom game is possible], and maybe sooner than you think," Marvel Studios production presient Kevin Feige revealed at the San Diego Comic Con following a fan question, as relayed by IGN.

The tag team-oriented 2D fighting series, which hit arcades in 1998 following X-Men vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, pits Marvel superheroes such as Wolverine and Spider-Man against various Capcom characters, including Mega Man, Resident Evil's Jill Valentine, Street Fighter's Ryu and Darkstalker's Morrigan.

Marvel vs. Capcom later appeared on PlayStation and Dreamcast, with a sequel released to arcades in 1999 and later arriving on Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Both the PS2 and Xbox versions have since highly-valued collector's items.

Capcom is known to have two fighters in the works, Street Fighter 4 and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes, with the latter pitting Capcom's lineup against the work of Gatchaman (G-Force: Guardians of Space) animators Tatsunoko.

Mega Man 9 Could Lead to Other 8-Bit Revivals; Castlevania Producer 'Watching Very Closely'

Jul 23, 2008 5:07pm CST tags: Mega Man 9, Capcom, Konami
Capcom's 8-bit downloadable revival Mega Man 9 (PS3, Wii, 360) could create new possibilities for developers if it proves a commercial success, Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi told Game|Life.

"I'm watching [Mega Man 9] very closely to see how it does," said Igarashi. "I'm a big retro gaming fan, so if it is successful that definitely opens up doors for what I can do."

Developed by ex-Capcom staffers at Japanese firm Inti Creates, Mega Man 9 made waves earlier this month when the title was revealed to be a stylized 8-bit endeavor making use of assets and gameplay conventions of the original NES Mega Man titles.

Mega Man 9 is developed from the ground-up as a downloadable title, and is the first game to be planned to hit all three platforms' respective digital storefronts... Read more

Lost Planet Movie, Screenwriter Confirmed

Jul 15, 2008 4:30am CST tags: Hollywood, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition - Colonies Edition, Capcom
Confirming a report from last week, Variety reports that Warner Brothers and Capcom are teaming up for a movie based on the sci-fi action game Lost Planet.

The screenplay will be penned by David Hayter, known in the game industry as the English language voice of Solid Snake, and in Hollywood for the X-Men 1 & 2 and Watchmen screenplays.

Producers Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul are quite familiar with fantasy properties - they produced several Marvel comic book movies before the comic book giant set up its own production firm, and their Seaside Entertainment company is also adapting Ghost in the Shell into a live action movie.

As with the upcoming Street Fighter movie, Capcom is expected to contribute to the financing of the Lost Planet movie.

Scans of gaming magazine Nintendo Power have revealed that a new downloadable edition of Capcom's original Mega Man series is in the works for the Wii. The company has since confirmed the game's development to Joystiq.

Titled simply Mega Man 9, the game was unveiled in scans posted by fan site The Mega Man Community. According to the article, the WiiWare-bound game is crafted in a classic 8-bit graphical style similar to the first six Mega Man games on the NES. Music and cinematic cutscenes will be similarly stylized.

Transcriptions of the article go on to reveal that Mega Man 9 returns to the series' roots with plainly-named bosses such as Magma Man, Plug Man and Galaxy Man. Using the Wii Remote turned on its side, the title employs a basic control scheme... Read more

Drive Up eBay Prices on Capcom Games, Improve Franchise Revivals Odds

Jun 12, 2008 2:10pm CST tags: Capcom, XBLA
Capcom frequently consults internet auction site eBay to assess the market for possible remakes or ports of its classic back catalog titles, product manager John Diamonon has revealed.

"To choose titles to revive, we see if we can give old franchises the modern touch, and we evaluate the fanbase and see if there's a market for it," Diamonon told MTV Multiplayer. "Sometimes we see games on eBay, and that's how you see what games people are willing to spend $80 on."

Diamonon stressed that going prices on eBay isn't the only means by which Capcom—creator of the Mega Man and Resident Evil series, among numerous others— measures interest in its franchises. In addition to the auction ... Read more

Capcom Releases Lifetime Sales of All Franchises; Resident Evil, Mega Man, Disney Top Charts

Tucked away within Capcom's recent financial results was a veritable goldmine of information on the company's worldwide software sales across the past 22 years.

The data is chock full of surprising revelations, such as the part where long-forgotten childhood favorites Chip'n Dale Rescue Rangers (NES) and Duck Tales (NES) have both outsold Dead Rising (360).

As pointed out by Next-Gen, Resident Evil is the company's best-selling franchise, amassing 34.5 million units in sales across 50 titles. The whopping 128 editions of Mega Man have sold 28 million worldwide.

Within the realm of individual software sales, the Super Nintendo edition of Street Fighter II reigns as the company's best-selling game ever, pushing 6.3 million units. Sadly absent from the million-seller list is Clover Studios' Okami (PS2, Wii).

Capcom Eyeing More Game-to-Film Adaptations

May 23, 2008 11:46am CST tags: Capcom, Hollywood
Street Fighter and Resident Evil property owner Capcom is in talks with Hollywood to turn more of its franchises into full-fledged feature films, according to company president Haruhiro Tsujimoto.

"We are in the process of working out contracts for several offers we received at the Cannes Film Festival last week and hope to make an announcement soon," Tsujimoto told Bloomberg.

While no specifics were provided, Capcom properties ripe for adaptation include Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Devil May Cry, Mega Man, Dino Crisis, and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

Capcom has seen great success at the box office and home video sales with the three live-action Resident Evil movies. A Street Fighter film, starring Kristin Kreuk, is currently in production and due next year.

"We want to do with games what Marvel did with comics," Tsujimoto added, referring to Marvel's ability to transform fan-favorite franchises such as X-Men and Iron Man to the big screen. "If realized, the projects will have a big impact on the game and movie industries."

Capcom Blames Ailing Arcades on Gas Prices

May 21, 2008 4:20pm CST tags: Capcom, Software Sales, Arcade
In its financial results for the 2007 fiscal year, Capcom has blamed the declining Japanese arcade market on the rising cost of fuel, among other factors.

As pointed out by Kotaku, the earnings report notes that while Capcom opened up nine new arcade plazas across Japan in 2007, the expansion showed "sluggish growth" under the ailing arcade market. Among several other factors, the company stated that bloating fuel costs played a role in reducing arcade patronage.

"There were several factors that negatively affected performance: the dissemination of home video game machines, intensified competition, declining popularity of card dispensing games for children, and the decrease of visitors to those arcades located in suburban shopping malls due to rising gasoline/petrol prices," Capcom said.

The company noted that arcade operating income took a 62.5% dive in 2007 versus the previous year, leading to a nearly 10% drop in Capcom's net profit for its arcade business.

Despite sluggish performance, the market is likely to see a boost when Capcom's Street Fighter IV hits Japanese arcades this summer.

Capcom April Fools' Joke: Sheng Long in SF4

Apr 01, 2008 6:51pm CST tags: Street Fighter 4, April Fools, Capcom
In what might be today's most recursive April Fools gag, Capcom has revealed character art for the infamous Sheng Long on its official blog, touting him as an unlockable character in Street Fighter IV.

The update emerged from a translation of the latest entry on the Japanese Street Fighter IV blog, where project manager Natsumi Shiozawa issued details on the character's appearance in the upcoming fighter.

The roots of the Sheng Long gag stretch back to 1992, when the character was introduced in EGM's April issue as a secret boss in Capcom's Street Fighter II. It ranks among the most infamous April Fools gag in the history of gaming, sparking a tradition that would bring woe to game journalists for years to come.

According to EGM, if the player could complete the game untouched while playing as Ryu, Sheng Long would replace M. Bison as the final boss in Street Fighter II. In his post today, Shiozawa referenced similar conditions to attain Sheng Long within Street Fighter IV.

The whole supposed existence of Sheng Long ties back to an old mistranslated victory quote, in which Ryu would proclaim "You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance" instead of "You must defeat my Dragon Punch to stand a chance" after winning a battle.

Capcom Gets MotoGP Game Rights through 2012; Acquires Tenchu PS2 and Xbox Developer K2

Mar 31, 2008 7:40pm CST tags: Capcom, K2, MotoGP
Publisher Capcom has announced that, across two unrelated business deals, it has acquired developer K2 along with a four-year hold on the worldwide rights for MotoGP-branded motorcycle racing games.

K2, which is best known for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and Xbox 360 entries in the stealth ninja action series Tenchu, will become a wholly-owned Capcom subsidiary as of May 1, 2008. In exchange, K2 will receive 201,720 shares of Capcom common stock.

Though K2 has developed several, but not all, entries in the Tenchu series, the studio does not own the property itself. The Tenchu property currently belongs to independent Japanese developer From Software, which acquired the franchise from publisher Activision in 2004.

The worldwide publishing rights for the MotoGP property, meanwhile, ensure that Capcom will be the only company with a licensed MotoGP title until 2012. Capcom noted its intent to publish a MotoGP title based on the 2008 season for PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, though it did not name a development studio.

Previous MotoGP titles have been published by multiple companies--including Capcom, Namco and THQ--with different editions of the games developed by Milestone and Climax Studios.

The title had been more or less confirmed by leaked achievements lists, trademark filings, and a recent blowout of the game in Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. On the company's official blog, Capcom PR rep Chris Kramer called the title "the worst-kept secret at Capcom in recent memory."
