New screenshots and artwork of Guerrilla Games' first PlayStation 3 effort Killzone 2 have been released, highlighting the shooter's multiplayer component.

Killzone 2 is scheduled for a February 2009 release.

Nintendo may have its Wii models, but Sony has taken the pretend-gaming angle one step further with this chatty multiplayer trailer for Killzone 2.

The multiplayer component of Guerilla Games' shooter is a class-based affair. Servers will support up to 32 players, with each side of 16 further broken up into squads of four.

Killzone 2 is set to arrive next February on PlayStation 3.

Shacknews guest contributor Jeb Haught recently got the chance to go hands-on with Guerrilla Games' PlayStation 3 shooter Killzone 2. He returns from the battlefield to provide us with his impressions and a few new screenshots. Take it away, Jeb.

I cooked another grenade and tossed it in the middle of the room below me. As it exploded, shrapnel hit the various objects littered around the room, including a propane tank. The tank spun around, shot off towards a large shelf, and exploded, killing one soldier and destroying the contents of the shelf.

It's what the developers refer to as "happy accidents," where unscripted random chain reaction events occur depending on the situation.

Sony Computer Entertainment America just sent over a timeline for the next nine months of SCE-published games on PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PSP.

The schedule confirms that many of the dates provided by SCE Europe apply to North America, such as LittleBigPlanet (PS3) in October and Killzone 2 (PS3) next February.

At a press event today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced that Guerrilla Games' long-anticipated PS3 shooter Killzone 2 is slated for a February 2009 release in the UK.

Though Sony Computer Entertainment America told Shacknews it has yet to confirm a North American release date, such major PlayStation 3 releases have been marked by near-simultaneous releases in North America and Europe.

Earlier this year, SCEE tentatively dated Killzone 2 for a September 2008 release. At the time, SCEA and developer Guerrilla both claimed that they had yet to make any announcement regarding the game's release.

Sony Computer Entertainment has provided a tentative timetable of this fall's major PlayStation 3 releases, videogamer reports.

According to the site, Media Molecule's cutesy and customizable platformer LittleBigPlanet (PS3) will arrive in the UK alongside Guerrilla Games' long-awaited first-person shooter Killzone 2 (PS3) this September.

Insomniac's launch title sequel Resistance 2 (PS3), SCE's other major first person shooter, will then hit UK retailers in November, complete with 60-person multiplayer and 8-player online co-op.

The November timeframe puts Resistance 2 in direct competition with Epic's Gears of War 2 (X360), just as the original Resistance faced off against the first Gears of War (X360) entry in November 2006.

Though Sony Computer Entertainment has yet to confirm North American release dates for the above titles, such major PlayStation 3 releases have been marked by near-simultaneous releases in North America and Europe.

The publisher previously expressed its intent to ship Resistance 2 in North America this fall, with a worldwide global release of LittleBigPlanet in that same general timeframe.

The latest batch of screenshots from Guerrilla Games' Killzone 2 (PS3) were "only the tiniest bit touched up," claims Guerrilla QA manager Seb Downie.

"There was a little bit of colour-correction done and some minor polish, but nothing major," Downie posted on the official PlayStation forum. "Still very close to reality and it looks better in motion in my opinion. "

Some changes are certainly evident when comparing select scenes from the E3 2007 gameplay trailer to the released screenshots, as demonstrated in this image gallery. However, it is unknown if the difference is due to progress with the game's visuals, post-processing, or a combination of those two factors.

A new batch of Killzone 2 screenshots has been released, showing a variety of characters and locations from the PlayStation 3-exclusive shooter.

The planned public beta for Guerilla Games' oft-trumpeted PS3-exclusive FPS Killzone 2 won't be arriving this year, Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed.

"We are hoping to do a beta but I don't think we'll have anything ready before this year is over," an SCEA representative told PlayStation Universe. "It is something we are working on for next year."

"Of course there is going to be a public beta," lead tester Seb Downie stated earlier this year. "I have always said that any game that has an online mode needs to go through a public beta to ensure it works as intended."

Both the Killzone 2 beta and the full game are expected to release at some point in 2008.
