Mirror's Edge Preview: Sweet Flips and Time Trials

Jul 21, 2008 1:20pm CST tags: Mirrors Edge, Preview
Following our flood of content from last week's E3 Media & Business Summit, we'll be highlighting noteworthy previews and features that may have gotten lost in the shuffle.

Ever since I first glimpsed the game at GDC, I've been hopeful that Mirror's Edge would deliver on its promise of simple-yet-skill-based first-person Price of Persia-esque platforming.

Now that I've actually had a chance to go hands-on with the title, I'm fairly confident that it will end up being one of my games of the year.

In other words, Mirror's Edge is flippin' sweet. The controls are incredibly simple to learn, but the nuances of the gameplay make it rather difficult to master... Read more

Mirror's Edge: Beatable without Firing a Single Bullet

Jul 14, 2008 5:32pm CST tags: Mirrors Edge
EA DICE's first-person action-adventure title Mirror's Edge (PC, PS3, 360) was shown at today's EA E3 press event.

The demonstration was identical to that shown at the Game Developers Conference, with one minor difference. This time around, the PlayStation 3 version was demoed, instead of the Xbox 360 version.

Reaction time, which slows down the game a la bullet time, was used to make an extremely long jump. An EA DICE representative also noted that reaction time can be used to perform more advanced combat moves.

"You can beat the whole game without firing a single bullet," the company revealed, stating that the feat will be one of the game's many achievements.

A new trailer was shown as well, highlighting protagonist Faith's ability to fire weapons while performing acrobatic maneuvers. In this instance, Faith fired a shotgun upwards while she was sliding near a guard.

New Mirror's Edge Details and Media Revealed

Jul 10, 2008 5:00am CST tags: Mirrors Edge, Trailer, Screenshots
Fresh information and media from EA DICE's unique first-person action adventure title Mirror's Edge has been released following a recent Electronic Arts event.

Mirror's Edge puts players into the control of Faith, the parkour-skilled heroine who must fight against an oppressive government in a sterile, minimalist world.

Check out the new screenshots and animated story trailer, and be sure to read over the additional gameplay details below.

Shackvideo users can use the HD Stream.

As detailed in our previous coverage of the game, the first-person, parkour-style action is managed by way of a simple context-sensitive control scheme. Pushing up on the controller allows Faith to jump over an obstacle, while pushing down will have her sliding underneath.

Further information on the game comes from psbeyond.com:

  • The single-player story mode is estimated at 10-12 hours in length.
  • Missions will not be based on free-roaming play, but each level will be non-linear, allowing for many possible paths and strategies.
  • Speed is emphasized over firepower. Heavier guns will weigh Faith down, and weapons are simply tossed away after they run out of ammo. ... Read more

Mirror's Edge Inspired by Whedon's Firefly

EA DICE's parkour-based action game Mirror's Edge (PC, PS3, 360) features a dystopian plot which draws thematic inspiration from Joss Whedon's Firefly television series, said senior producer Owen O'Brien.

"To be very honest, I'm a big Joss Whedon fan, and a lot of the things in the story of the game came from Firefly and [feature film adaptation] Serenity," O'Brien told Gamasutra.

Mirror's Edge made waves early last month when publisher Electronic Arts released a gameplay trailer from the game, showing off the title's free-running action and Unreal Engine 3-powered visual style.

"It's very easy to look at this game, to misunderstand this game, and say, it's one girl against this police-state dictatorship. It's not. It's more subtle than that," added O'Brien. "One of the core questions that the game asks you is, how much of ... Read more

Mirror's Edge Built with Unreal Engine 3

May 07, 2008 4:40pm CST tags: Mirrors Edge, Unreal Engine 3, EA DICE
EA DICE revealed that the free running action game Mirror's Edge (PC, PS3, X360) was built with Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 middleware, Joystiq reports.

Though DICE regularly makes use of its internally-developed technology, the Mirror's Edge project began early in the development of its Frostbite engine, prompting the studio to use Epic's technology instead.

"With Mirror's Edge we deliberately set out to create something that was different from Battlefield," said a studio representative. "Frostbite is a very powerful engine but this project started a long time ago, and at that time Frostbite was still being developed and was very closely supporting the Battlefield Bad Company team."

Epic's Unreal Engine 3 has been licensed for use in development by a number of studios including Konami, 2K Games, and John Romero's Slipgate Ironworks studio. For more on Mirror's Edge, be sure to check out the new trailer.

Mirror's Edge Screenshots Look Familiar

Feb 29, 2008 9:00am CST tags: Mirrors Edge, Screenshots
Shacknews editor Chris Faylor got a look at EA DICE's new action-adventure IP Mirror's Edge during this year's GDC, and came away most impressed by its ambitious stab at first-person platforming.

The game certainly has a distinct visual style. Whereas many games are set in dark, dreary urban jungles, the city of Mirror's Edge is awash with light hues and sharp orange accents. And that's pretty much all we've seen so far.

There's a long way to go, though. Mirror's Edge is expected to debut later this year on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Mirror's Edge Impressions

Feb 29, 2008 7:00am CST tags: Mirrors Edge, Preview
It's not all about Battlefield over at EA DICE these days. The company's first-person action-adventure title Mirror's Edge (PC, PS3, X360) also made a big showing at GDC, from which Shacknews editor Chris Faylor brings us this positive preview.
Of all the games I saw at this year's Game Developers Conference, Mirror's Edge was the one that interested me the most. Its unconventional take on the action-adventure platforming genre holds a lot of potential, and translating what is typically third-person gameplay to a first-person perspective presents a daunting, yet exciting series of obstacles for the crew over at DICE. First Screenshots from DICE's Mirror's Edge Released

Jan 10, 2008 3:44pm CST tags: Screenshots, Mirrors Edge
Stockholm-based EA DICE, the studio responsible for the successful Battlefield franchise, has released the first screenshots from its upcoming sandbox action game Mirror's Edge, announced last July and said to draw from the rooftop-jumping sport of parkour. (Update: They can be found at the On Mirror's Edge fansite.)

The screenshots depict a dense urban landscape rendered in a high-contrast, painterly style that Shacknews' Jeff Gondek described as "almost Sid Mead-esque."

When the game was announced, senior producer Owen O'Brien said, "We want to enable the player to move like a real person, with the ability to run, jump, vault and slide in a way that has never been seen before." Mirror's Edge is expected to ship for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 some time in 2008.

EA DICE Reveals Mirror's Edge

Jul 10, 2007 5:34pm CST tags: Electronic Arts, EA DICE, Mirrors Edge
One of Electronic Arts' internal studios, Stockholm-based Battlefield developer EA DICE, officially announced the development of Mirror's Edge today.

A first-person action-adventure game based on the street sport of parkour, Mirror's Edge will come to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 some time in 2008, according to EA. Information detailing the title's development surfaced earlier this year when the game was code-named Project Faith and was said to feature an acrobatic female protagonist in a sprawling city environment.

"We are a studio that believes in taking risks and taking games in new directions," said Patrick Soderlund, GM at EA DICE. "We made... Read more
