Gran Turismo 5 Links PS3s to Get Crazy High Resolution, Frame Rate

Nov 19, 2008 10:00pm CST tags: Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
Sometimes, the PlayStation 3's famed horsepower just isn't enough. When the systems aren't being linked together to make supercomputers, they apparently get connected to have some fun, as the Gran Turismo team did last month.

In celebration of the racing series' tenth anniversary in October, the crew from developer Polyphony Digital threw a party in New York City in which some Sony displays let players try out versions of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue in 2160p resolution and at 240 frames per second.

The high-resolution display and the super-smooth display, which were separate demonstrations, each used four PlayStation 3 consoles in tandem to produce the on-screen image.

The 2160p screen used the systems to each draw one quarter of the screen at a normal HD 1080p resolution, and the images were combined on the fly ... Read more

Environmental Group Rates Console Energy Use

Nov 19, 2008 6:55pm CST tags: Study
The Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental non-profit group, has studied the energy consumption patterns of the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, and released a report showing each system's impact on the environment.

The study, noticed by Slashdot, found that American console players consume 16 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, on par with the entire consumption of the city of San Diego, California.

The Wii is far and away the most frugal of the three current-generation consoles by consuming an average of only 16 watts while active. The next best, the Xbox 360, leaps up 119 watts on average, and the PlayStation 3 steps up further to an average 150 watts.

The NRDC argues that the use of power-saving features in consoles could cut up to 11 billion of that 16 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, saving $1 billion on electric bills and cutting CO2 emissions by 7 million tons--as much as all the cars in San Jose, California.

The group pointed out that the 360 and PS3's power-saving auto-shutdown features are turned off by default. Shacknews readers are encouraged to visit the NRDC's guides for enabling power-saving features to save a few bucks.

Codemasters has taken the wraps off DiRT 2, the sequel to the 2007 off-road racer expected next year for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

The game will focus largely on improving upon the original DiRT, and executive producer Gavin Raeburn promised that the game's graphics, physics, single-player career, and multiplayer features will get some extra attention from the internal Codemasters studio working on the game.

In territories outside North America, the game will still be called Colin McRae: DiRT 2, in honor of the legendary rally racing driver who was killed in 2007 in a helicopter accident. The new game will also take inspiration from McRae's late career, according to Raeburn.

"His ventures into events such as the X-Games, Dakar Rally and the Race of Champions have inspired us to look at events covering the extremes of off-road motorsport," said the producer to IGN UK.

The game is set to use an evolved version of the EGO engine that powered the first game as well as on-road racer GRID. "The development team have... Read more
