What's Wrong With Wolf?

Jun 08, 2001 8:50am CST tags: Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Here's a little editorial piece on Return to Wolfenstein and the "strange" choices that have been made about the characters and violence etc that are involved in the game.

Maybe I'm the only one out there the feels like this, but I was really really hoping that Wolfenstein would have B.J. charging back to Castle Wolfenstein, guns blazing, and Nazi soldiers dying by the hundreds. What I didn't want was mutants, zombies, aliens, or monsters. I can get that in DOOM or Duke, where they are meant to be. Most first-person shooters, in fact, are rife with them. The last thing I want is more of the same, [snip]

Wolfenstein Preview

Return to Wolfenstein Trailer

Jun 06, 2001 3:32pm CST tags: Trailer, Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Contrary to earlier reports saying the Return to Castle Wolfenstein E3 trailer wouldn't be released on the internet due to legal issues with Fox, Fileplanet is now hosting the trailer so I guess those issues have been solved. The movie is a pretty big download at 44mb. There is a mirror of the file on Smidge.com if Fileplanet is too slow or puts you in that queue system they have. Take a look at the new Nazi killing game!

Update: the Smidge.com mirror has been removed. Everybody get in line!

Update 2: there are three mirrors courtesy of Chatbear, mirror 1, mirror 2, mirror 3. These will be up for a limited time.

If those screenshots of Wolfenstein released at E3 werent enough for you, here are a few more screen grabs from the video they were showing. Not quite high quality but you get what you can get.

Wolf2K E3 Trailer? Nope.

If you were hoping to see the Return to Wolfenstein trailer that was shown at E3 released online dont count on it anytime soon. According to the producer on the project who is quoted at Achtung! Wolfenstein Fox is holding up the release. Thanks Choolz

Nextgame.it sends word of an impressive collection of new screenshots of Return To Wolfenstein that they managed to get a hold of from Activision who loves to send us PRs of all those turd games they publish but forgets to send us the cool stuff. Here are the rest of the shots.

Happy Birthday, Wolfenstein 3D

May 05, 2001 9:03am CST tags: John Carmack, id Software, Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Can you believe it's been 9 years since the release of Wolfenstein 3D? This id Software game changed gaming, that's for sure. Also the engine, one of the many impressive game engines by John Carmack. If you're feeling nostalgic you can download the 836k shareware episode. There is also that OpenGL port of the original game if you want to run the game under Windows with prettier graphics.
Of course, we also have the new Return to Castle Wolfenstein coming later this year. Though it looks to be different with several weird monsters instead of all Nazi soldiers and a couple of weapons not really available during the second World War, it should hopefully still be another good game starring William J. "B.J." Blazkowicz.

Wolfenstein Details

Apr 30, 2001 8:44pm CST tags: Return to Castle Wolfenstein
I caught the article in the latest PCGamer which has a big feature on Return To Wolfenstein by Gray Matter Studios (KingPin guys) and was meaning to mention it here. The Achtung Wolfenstein folks though went all crazy and did a pretty good summary of a lot of the points revealed about the title. Here are a few of them:

Click to enlarge- Plotline: involves Himmler's attempts to revive the ghost of a 10th-century leader and raise an army - - of Nazis undead to rule the world.
- Blaskowitz's agency is called the Office of Secret Actions (OSA)
- The mechanized Hitler boss is "likely" to make a return appearance
- There will be 16 weapons in the game
- The lightning weapon is indeed called the "Tesla Gun", and can attack multiple enemies at once
- The game's heads up display (HUD) will tell you what items are breakable, what things are climbable, and what enemies are susceptible to backstabbing

Wolfenstein 3D II?

Feb 27, 2001 6:43pm CST tags: Return to Castle Wolfenstein
The 3DRealms website has an interesting bit about how ROTT first started out as the sequel to Wolfenstein3D. They also dug up the original team design spec with the help of Tom Hall who is now at Ion Storm.

Return To Wolfenstein

Jan 12, 2001 5:19pm CST tags: Activision, Return to Castle Wolfenstein
As Friday winds down I finally dug up (read: pleaded with a friend at a magazine) those Return To Wolfenstein screenshots that showed up on the net a while ago. Most of the screenshots you've probably seen before but a few of them might be new. Also, here is a preview of the game I missed a couple of days ago. At any rate here are a bunch of shots, mostly in pretty good resolution (1024x768 range) and halfway respectable quality. One of you Activision punks send us the originals! The game was announced just about a year ago.

Wolfenstein Q&A

Dec 12, 2000 4:33pm CST tags: Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Greg Goodrich, executive producer on Return to Castle Wolfenstein, has been interviewed over at Achtung Wolfenstein!. Actually it's more a one-way note of "what's up" with the game, addressing some of the misconceptions about the new Wolfenstein game. For starters, despite some screenshots seemingly indicating otherwise, there will be no robots/cyborgs in the game.

New Wolfenstein Screenshots

Dec 02, 2000 12:59pm CST tags: Screenshots, Return to Castle Wolfenstein
It was early May since we last saw some new screenshots from Return to Wolfenstein, and thanks to PC Zone, Achtung, Wolfenstein! now has seven new screenshots. Looks like Gray Matter is putting the Quake3 engine to good use, even though the screenshots aren't the best of quality. At least they aren't thumbnail sized or scanned. Thanks Voodoo Extreme. For some older screenshots, check here.

Here's a game we havent heard much about in quite a while. Return From Wolfenstein being developed by GrayMatter (Formerly Xatrix) screenshots have sprung up overseas. (Hit the coverview link). Thanks Eric & BluesNews. The screenshots are fairly low res though, the only high-res screenshots I know of are these 3 originals that came out around E3 time last year. You can see all the Wolf2K stories here. (Gonna hopefully have some convenine links in the near future for people to pick and choose categories)

update: Here is a direct link. Thanks GLadiator

Saw on Voodoo Extreme that the OpenGL Wolfenstein port has resurfaced on Sourceforge. There's a link to release notes, but there are none so it's unknown what has changed.
