Return To Wolfenstein in CGW

Mar 05, 2000 11:55am CST tags: Activision, Return to Castle Wolfenstein
As was speculated, confirmed, and then announced by Activision a little while ago. Grey Matter Studios formerly Xatrix Entertainment is working on the sequel to Wolfenstein3D. "Return To Wolfenstein" using Quake3 technology.  The latest issue of CGW is carrying a bit on the game promising more coverage next month. There is some good news in there, firstly that the game is looking at a possible release this year for the Christmas holidays. Secondly, the guys at GMS are making multiplayer an "integral part of the game". Taking into consideration the amount of extra time GMS (Xatrix) spent after the release of KingPin tweaking the multiplayer this is quite good news. Really looking forward to seeing this one at E3.

Return To Wolfenstein

Jan 31, 2000 9:49am CST tags: Activision, id Software, Return to Castle Wolfenstein
It looks like we get to play Wolfenstein in *actual* 3D. Dig the official press release from Activision that came out this morning.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- In an exciting move, id Software has licensed the rights to develop a sequel to their legendary first-person shooter, Wolfenstein 3-D®, to Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI - news). The new title, Return to Castle Wolfenstein(TM), will be developed by Gray Matter Interactive Studios, a newly formed game developer founded by the top designers formerly from Xatrix Entertainment, the developer of such popular games as Redneck Rampage and Kingpin. Return to Castle Wolfenstein will be published by Activision with id Software overseeing development of the game.

Like the original id game, players assume the role of William J. ``B.J.'' Blazkowicz, the Allies' bad boy of WWII espionage. The fate of the free world hangs in the balance as B.J. battles against the sadistic machinations of a Nazi war machine bent on world domination. This latest sequel will reflect the same over-the-top comic book style of the original Wolfenstein 3D. However, by using the unparalleled graphics technology of the QUAKE III Arena(TM) engine and a new scripting system, Return to Castle Wolfenstein will pull the player further into a chilling storyline filled with frightening tales of bio-engineering and the occult. Devotees of multiplayer action will be able to jump online and frag-it-out within the unique Wolfenstein world.

Quick Translation: Gray Matter Interactive Studios, who used to be Xatrix, the guys who made Kingpin, are using the the Quake3 Engine to make Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Nifty eh? 10:30am update by Steve: As a few people pointed out, this project was 'sort-of' confirmed in December of last year according to this news item, as well as earlier, November 1st even. This is the official PR from Activision now though.

Wolfenstein2000 Confirmed

Dec 14, 1999 6:58pm CST tags: id Software, Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Many of you may remember this story from back in early November about a newspaper article spotted which talked about Xatrix Entertainment working on a Wolfenstein2000 project with the Quake3 engine. No official confirmation was ever really found from id Software or Xatrix, but some keen eyes spotted this little bit from Tim Willits in the recent id Software chat: (Thanks DVZ)

<Willits> a version of wolfenstein using the Quake 3 engine is currently in development
<Willits> ...but not by id software, under the DIRECTION of id software

The Weekend Conspiracy

Dec 11, 1999 1:38pm CST tags: id Software, Return to Castle Wolfenstein
For all you weekend conspiracy theorists, a little bit of investigation returns that the Doom2000.com domain is already registered in the name of id Software. What is even more interesting... or well, entertaining though is that all kinds of people have already registered Quake4.com etc all the way up to Quake7.com. Surprisingly none of those domains are owned by the GameSpy Industry folks. Fear not though, they have Planetdoom.com.

What does this all mean? A whole lot of nothing really, id has already stated that the Doom2000 project is a possibility, so they are simply covering their bases. We do know for certain that Xatrix Entertainment is working on Wolfenstein2000 right now.
