First In-game MAG Screenshot Emerges

Jul 23, 2008 1:05pm CST tags: MAG, Screenshots
The first in-game screenshot of the 256-player, PlayStation 3-exclusive MAG has appeared on Sony's PlayStation.Blog, offering an early—albeit low-resolution—look at the shooter MMO.

Developed by SOCOM veterans Zipper Interactive, MAG—or Massive Action Game—was announced at last week's E3 2008 during Sony's press conference. The game is said to bring colossal battles to a single persistent world, with the 256 players per battle broken into 8-player squads.

No release date has yet been specified for MAG, though Sony has confirmed that the game won't be coming in the 2008 calendar year.

Exclusive Left 4 Dead Screenshot Shows New Design

Jul 22, 2008 9:09pm CST tags: Left 4 Dead, Screenshots
Following up on yesterday's terrifyingly awesome box art, Valve has provided Shacknews with an exclusive screenshot from its multiplayer zombie shooter Left 4 Dead.

The screenshot details the recent redesign of Louis, who formerly sported a heavy jacket and a full head of hair. According to Valve founder Gabe Newell, the decision to overhaul the design of the four main characters stemmed from a desire to create easily distinguishable silhouettes, a practice the company first applied in Team Fortress 2.

Developed by Turtle Rock Studios, which Valve acquired earlier this year, Left 4 Dead is slated to hit PC and Xbox 360 on November 4. For more on the game, check out our hands-on impressions from E3 and footage from that playthrough.

Capcom has issued more details and the first media from the Wii edition of its mall-exploring zombie-killing effort Dead Rising, which originally hit Xbox 360 in 2006.

Dubbed Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, the game is said to utilize a level of interaction similar to that of Resident Evil 4 Wii, allowing gamers to aim and fire guns, swing weapons and shake off zombies using the Wii Remote.

The original title's oft-chastised save system has also been revised "for more seamless gameplay," though Capcom did not specify further how the system has changed.

Powered by the Resident Evil 4 Wii engine, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop is scheduled for a worldwide release this coming winter.

Chrono Trigger DS Hands-on: Blast from the Past

Jul 16, 2008 5:19pm CST tags: Chrono Trigger, E3 2008, Preview, Screenshots
With such an extensive roster of remakes and revisions of classic titles both released and in development, it seemed inevitable that Square Enix would eventually return to its classic SNES RPG Chrono Trigger. Inevitability aside, it's a well-deserved retread.

As previously revealed, the title's Nintendo DS appearance is a straight port—no fancy 3D graphics, no voice acting. Simply the game as you likely remember it or a bit crisper, thanks to a sharp LCD screen.

Chrono Trigger DS takes advantage of the hardware in ways seen in other Square Enix DS RPGs, restricting the top screen to the game itself while map navigation, menu options and battle control are pinned to the system's touch screen.

While rooting through an unsuspecting neighbor's house or exploring a dungeon, a detailed map offering a full overview of the surrounding geometry will... Read more

BioShock PS3 Exclusive DLC Detailed (Updated)

Jul 16, 2008 4:11pm CST tags: BioShock, E3 2008, Screenshots
2K Games revealed new details on the exclusive DLC for the PlayStation 3 version of BioShock.

The company has created "challenge rooms" that will challenge players to make use of plasmids and other abilities to overcome undisclosed obstacles.

"Challenge rooms retain the flavor of Rapture, but they're not trying to retrofit new story or new levels into the original game," said a 2K representative to Shacknews. "We're very, very respectful of the original experience."

The DLC will be accessed from the main menu. A Portal-style timer starts at the beginning of each challenge, and the player will be faced with a puzzle.

One example shown off was a carnival-themed level. The player had to compete in carnival games, using plasmid power to throw tennis balls into crates. The player then entered a room with a safe, where a series of trap bolts protected the safe. The player had to use telekensis to move the bolts, then continue to solve another series of mini-puzzles in order to save a Little Sister from a malfunctioning ferris wheel.
