Atari sends along this press release, confirming that Unreal Tournament 2004 is in development. Shipping this fall, Unreal Tournament 2004 will feature all the content of Unreal Tournament 2003 + bonus packs, as well as twenty new maps, new modes (Assault returns) and vehicle based combat. Here's a bit on one of these new game modes featuring vehicles.
* Onslaught Mode: New multi-player oriented combat game type on custom-built large-scale maps featuring awesome new weapons and land- and air-based vehicles. From the lethal bomber to the nefarious spider mines - players will work as teams to control map points and win the conflict. There are currently nine Onslaught maps planned to ship with the game.

Planet Unreal has a news post with a few quotes from Epic's Steven Polge and Mark Rein. Looks like there will be an announcement about the next Unreal Tournament at E3, with Mark Rein saying "If there were going to be a UT2004 it would be fully backward compatible with 2003 so mod makers wouldn't have to worry about that. But that's all I can say for now :)".
