Harmonix Gets Rock Band 2 Class Action Lawsuit

Nov 21, 2008 12:27pm CST tags: Rock Band 2, Legal, Lawsuit, Harmonix, MTV Games, Viacom
Everybody involved in the making of music-rhythm phenomenon Rock Band--developer Harmonix, publisher MTV, MTV owner Viacom, and distributor Electronic Arts--has been hit with a class-action lawsuit stemming from the game's drum peripheral.

Monte Morgan of Kansas alleges that the above four companies conspired to sell defective drum kits after admitting that the drums' kick pedals were defective. Morgan's lawyers noted that the defendants' special warranty extension lasted until October 1--just before the release of Rock Band 2 featuring a new and improved kick pedal.

That timing was not a coincidence, but rather a strategy designed to coax defective Rock Band drum owners into buying a new Rock Band 2 instrument bundle, claim lawyers in court filings obtained by GameCyte.

In less conspiratorial terms, the lawyers also claim that Rock Band's current 60-day warranty isn't enough in case, for example, a parent buys a copy for their child far in advance of Christmas.

Defective instruments have been a thorn in Rock Band's side since... Read more

Harmonix Founders Get $300 Million Bonus

Nov 10, 2008 7:14pm CST tags: Harmonix, MTV Games, Rock Band 2, Viacom
Viacom may be part of the same media empire as the money-hemorrhaging Midway, but that hasn't stopped the MTV Games parent from giving $300 million to just two men: Alex Rigopulos and Eran Egozy, founders of Rock Band developer Harmonix.

Bloomberg reports that the duo, who started Harmonix in 1995 during their time at MIT, "received $150 million last quarter for exceeding performance targets" and are due another payment "exceeding $150 million" in 2009.

"We may not have anticipated the payment would be that high, but it's based on what they have achieved," said Viacom spokeswoman Kelly McAndrew.

Lest readers think that Rigopulos and Egozy have suddenly stumbled upon a goldmine, the team have received performance-based bonuses for some time. $208 million was set aside to be paid out to former Harmonix shareholders in 2008, adding to the $175 million also paid to acquire the Boston-based developer.

Gibson Claims Guitar Hero Games Violate Patent; Viacom Drops Guitar Hero Royalty Suit

Mar 12, 2008 5:20pm CST tags: Guitar Hero, Activision, Viacom, Lawsuit, Gibson
Following guitar manufacturer Gibson's claims that the wildly successful Guitar Hero franchise violates a 1999 patent, Guitar Hero owner Activision has filed a lawsuit seeking to invalidate Gibson's patent.

According to the suit, as reported by Reuters, Gibson alleges that the series infringes on a patent for technology that simulates a concert performance via pre-recorded audio and a musical instrument.

Gibson notified Activision of the infringement in a letter on January 7, stating that Activision needed to obtain a license from Gibson .

In response, Activision claimed that Guitar Hero does not violate Gibson's patent, and that the three-year delay between the debut of Guitar Hero and Gibson's allegation has granted the company an implied license.

Interestingly, Gibson previously granted Activision the license to use Gibson instruments in the games and as a model for the series' guitar-shaped ... Read more

Rock Band Earns Harmonix Possible $208M Bonus

Mar 03, 2008 1:50pm CST tags: Rock Band, Harmonix, Viacom, MTV Games
The strong performance of Harmonix's multiplayer rhythm game Rock Band (PS2, PS3, X360) may have earned its former shareholders upwards of $208 million, reports Gamasutra.

Going by Viacom's annual report to the SEC, the company's acquisition of Harmonix in 2005 included a clause that stipulated performance-based incentives for the former sharholders if Rock Band exceeded expectations.

The report notes that some $208.7 million in bonuses has been set aside, to be paid out over the 2008 calendar year.

According to Newsweek's N'Gai Croal, this brings Viacom's total Harmonix-related spendings to over $380 million, despite Rock Band and all of its DLC amounting to roughly $190 million in gross revenue. The game has sold over 1.5 million units and 2.5 million downloadable songs since its November 20 debut.

Rumor: Viacom Makes Take-Two Buyout Offer

Feb 07, 2008 1:17pm CST tags: Buyout, Viacom, Rockstar, Industry News: PC & Console, Rumor, Take-Two Interactive Software
Publisher Take-Two Interactive Software may be the target of a $1.5 billion buyout offer from entertainment conglomerate Viacom, according to "industry rumors" reported by MCV.

If true, the move would mark the latest in the recent rash of video game buyouts and mergers, the most notable of which was Activision Blizzard, the unexpected $18.9 billion combination of major publisher Activision with Blizzard Entertainment owner Vivendi Games.

The Take-Two umbrella encompasses multiple successful franchises and their respective developers, including the crime-life simulator Grand Theft Auto, underwater story-driven shooter BioShock, turn-based city builder Sid Meier's Civilization, along with the Midnight Club and Carnival Games properties.

The company also publishes titles based on the Go, Diego, Go! and Dora the Explorer brands, which are owned by Viacom subsidiary Nickelodeon. The varied... Read more

Midway: "Fewer, Bigger, Better" Games in 2008

Dec 28, 2007 1:17pm CST tags: Viacom, Games: PC & Console
Midway CEO David Zucker has a plan, one that he hopes will guide the video game publisher and developer to its first annual profit since 1999. The key lies with producing "fewer, bigger, better" games, he told the Chicago Tribune.

Other initiatives include an emphasis on license-driven titles based on movies and more active involvement from newly-elected Midway chairwoman Shari Redstone, daughter of majority shareholder and Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone.

The latter half of 2007 was filled with strife for Midway. In August, it announced that it lost $14.3 million in Q2. Several of its titles--including the PlayStation 3 editions of Stranglehold, Unreal Tournament 3, and BlackSite: Area 51--were delayed due to technical difficulties. Its major PC release, the Epic-developed Unreal Tournament 3, sold less than 35,000 copies in its first two weeks of availability at retail.

Furthermore, just before BlackSite: Area 51 arrived on PlayStation 3... Read more

Viacom Partners With Microsoft for Casual Gaming, BET Programming on Xbox Live

Dec 19, 2007 2:21pm CST tags: Viacom, XBLA, Xbox Live Marketplace, Games: PC & Console, Microsoft
Viacom and Microsoft have teamed up for a mutually beneficial content and advertising deal, with a few gaming-related endeavors included in the agreement. The terms of the deal weren't revealed, although Microsoft claims the deal is valued at $500 million.

As part of the deal, Viacom will work to become Microsoft's "preferred publishing partner across Microsoft's casual gaming platforms." These platforms comprise Xbox Live Arcade as well as MSN and Windows, on which Microsoft will host Viacom property-related downloadable games.

Microsoft has also renewed its Xbox Live Marketplace content agreement with Viacom, adding programming from BET to the already available MTV Networks and Paramount content on the multimedia download service. The non-gaming related aspects of the deal include Microsoft hosting Viacom ads on its servers and buying advertising from Viacom's television and online content channels.

Bruckheimer and MTV Team Up to Found Game Studio

Dec 19, 2007 1:32am CST tags: Activision, Electronic Arts, Viacom, Industry News: PC & Console
Viacom subsidiary MTV's game division has announced plans to work with prolific Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Kangaroo Jack, Flashdance, Rafferty and the Highway Hustlers) on a new "game incubation studio" that intends to create new entertainment properties that will start life as video games.

According to the announcement, the studio will be staffed by "a team of experienced video game experts, artists and storytellers." The move is part of MTV's previously announced plans to invest $500 million into games.

In an interview with MTV's Stephen Totilo, MTV executive VP Jeff Yapp explained that Bruckheimer will work with additional studios, either internal or external to MTV. Yapp sees the venture as challenging established publishers like Electronic Arts and Activision: "I already think we are," he said. "How's that for arrogance?"

Bruckheimer has some experience with adapting games to film--he is a producer on the upcoming Prince of Persia film--and, as well, a number of his Hollywood works have been translated into games. Meanwhile, MTV Games has been involved with numerous video game projects, most recently including Harmonix's... Read more

Activision Responds to Harmonix/MTV Accusations: Harmonix 'Unwilling to Discuss an Agreement'

Dec 13, 2007 11:09pm CST tags: Activision, Viacom, Guitar Hero 3, Sony
Activision has sharply responded to statements made earlier this week by MTV Games-owned Harmonix that the Guitar Hero III publisher blocked the release of a patch intended to allow compatibility between Harmonix's Rock Band and PlayStation 3 versions of Activision's Guitar Hero III guitar controller.

According to Activision, Harmonix and MTV were the companies blocking progress--not Activision, its subsidiary publisher Red Octane, and Guitar Hero III developer Neversoft.

"The recent announcement by MTV Games/Viacom's Harmonix division that Activision is blocking Sony from releasing a patch and their plea to enable Rock Band software to work with Guitar Hero hardware paints a very misleading picture," reads the statement, released to the press tonight.

"In fact, Harmonix and its parent company MTV Games/Viacom recently declined Activision's offer to reach an agreement that would allow the use of Guitar Hero guitar controllers with Rock Band, the statement continues. "We have been and remain open to discussions with Harmonix and MTV Games/Viacom about the use of our technology in Rock Band. Unfortunately for Rock Band users, in this case Harmonix and MTV Games/Viacom are unwilling to discuss an agreement with Activision."

The nature of Activision's proposed agreement was not stated. "Activision's top priority is to provide consumers with a seamless marriage of best-in-class hardware and software. We are focusing our efforts on innovating hardware and software that are designed to work together, work flawlessly and provide an enjoyable gaming experience," concludes the statement.

Meanwhile, platform holder Sony Computer Entertainment has declined to comment in any significant way on the matter. "At SCEA, we of course want this resolved and to ensure the best possible gaming experience," the company said in a statement. "We encourage MTV, Harmonix and Activision to discuss this among themselves so there can be an amicable resolution in the best interest of the consumer."

Following parent company Take-Two Interactive's announcement of its sixth consecutive quarterly loss, wholly-owned subsidiary 2K Games has closed its New York City offices. Take-Two will move the publisher to the West Coast, with some 2K staff apparently being let go amidst the shuffle.

"They're just moving to the West Coast to provide more cohesiveness," a Take-Two representative told Next Generation. Some staff have reportedly chosen not to relocate, with an undisclosed number... Read more

  • Xfire Announces PS3 Involvement, In the Works for Wii?

    [ps3]

Last month, word got out that online gaming communication and tracking provider Xfire would be offering some kind of service for PlayStation 3, but details were hazy at the time. Today, the Viacom-owned company announced it will be offering its friend tracking and chat services as a PS3 middleware SDK that can be used by other developers if so desired. The first PS3 game to use Xfire will be Sony Online Entertainment's action/RPG launch title Untold Legends Dark Kingdom. Apparently, after logging into Sony's PS3 online service, players will also be able to log into an Xfire account for games that support the service. Messaging and chat seem to be available through both services, leaving it up to players to decide which service they prefer. One advantage of Xfire over the standard PlayStation Network Platform service is that it will allow PS3 Xfire users to communicate with PC Xfire users, similarly to the cross-platform PC/Xbox 360 interoperability with Microsoft's upcoming Live Anywhere service. However, it seems that Sony Online Entertainment's downloadable content will be available only through the PlayStation Network Platform and not Xfire, at least initially. Both GameSpot and IGN released interviews with Xfire CEO Mike Cassidy about the service's details.

Speaking to those publications, Cassidy made comments that many have interpreted as indicating that Xfire also has a Wii service in the works. He also more openly stated that the company has a working PS2 Xfire prototype, but had nothing official to announce as to that project's status. Asked by IGN whether Xfire would work with Microsoft or Nintendo, Cassidy responded, "Yes, we would like to work with both. Let's just say it is more likely we'll work with one of them than the other." Speaking to GameSpot, he was a little less cagey, admitting, "We are in talks with one other console maker." Given that Microsoft has run its own full featured proprietary online platform for several years on Xbox and Xbox 360 and is already gearing up for its cross-platform Live Anywhere, it seems more likely that Nintendo would be the company in question.

  • DS Goes to Level 5

    [ds]

Japanese studio Level 5 has long been known for its RPG efforts on Sony platforms, being responsible for the Dark Cloud series (PS2), Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (PS2) with Square-Enix, and the upcoming White Knight Story (PS3) and Jeanne d'Arc (PSP). Today, the company announced a new game that marks a deviation both in the company's usual platforms and genre. It is developing and publishing an adventure game for Nintendo DS entitled Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village; this will be Level 5's first self-published game.

Level 5 president, and frequent director and producer, Akihiro Hino will be heading up the game's development, while the game's puzzles will be supervised by mental training author Akira Tago. According to IGN, Level 5's Hino enjoyed Tago's books as a child, which led to Tago's involvement in this game.

Visually, the game seems to draw as much or more from European animation styles as from the Japanese anime traditional that has been associated with most of Level 5's work. The company has released a few initial screenshots and pieces of artwork. Interestingly, the official site announces a voice cast for the game, suggesting it will have a substantial amount of voice acting. The game tells the story of protagonist Ruke and the titular Professor Layton, who must visit a mysterious village (surprise) and uncover a hidden inheritance by way of solving the game's puzzles.

Level 5 plans to release the game to Japanese store shelves in February 2007. No North American release has been announced, but it is very unlikely the studio would self-publish abroad, and may be looking for a third party publishing deal.

  • PS3 Cable Clarification

    [ps3]

Apparently confirming inferences dating back from last month, various publications are reporting on news from Japanese publication Famitsu that PlayStation 3, both in its 20GB and 60GB hard drive incarnations, will come bundled only with a composite video cable, and not a component video cable or an HDMI cable. This makes the "premium" Xbox 360 model the only next-gen console confirmed to ship with component cables. However, in a nice touch, PS3 will accept the same multi A/V out cable as its predecessor PS2, meaning that if you're got PS2 component cables lying around, you'll be all set to run your PS3 in HD.

  • Wii Cable Clarification

    [nintendo]

Yesterday, Nintendo held a Japanese event focused around announcements for the upcoming Wii launch. The conference was intended for retailers, and thus was more concerned with discussing accessory availability and pricing information than with game announcements. The company released a list of cables and other extra components to be made available when the machine launches in Japan.

Several A/V output cables were confirmed. All prices given are for the Japanese market. As previously revealed, the system will ship with a composite video cable; replacements can be purchased for 1000 yen ($8.38). S-Video and Component cables will also be available for 2500 yen ($20.95) each. Finally, a D-Cable, which is unlikely to be sold in North America, will be available for the same price.

Nintendo will be offering a branded 512MB SD card for 3800 yen ($31.84), though it is worth noting that it is simply a standard SD card and players will be able to buy third party cards, likely for significantly fewer yen/dollars per megabyte.

For users who do not have a wi-fi network to get Wii online, Nintendo will offer an ethernet adapter for 2800 yen ($23.46). The system can also get an internet connection through the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector, released earlier for Nintendo DS.

  • Nintendo Announces Nintendo World, Shows People Playing

    [nintendo]

Nintendo has announced initial details for a series of events in Japan that will feature playable Wii and Nintendo DS consoles open to the public in major cities. Tokyo Game Show is known for being a big industry event that is open to the public, but Nintendo does not generally attend TGS, making this a major opportunity for the Japanese public to try out the device before its December launch in Japan. Nintendo World 2006, as the tour has been dubbed, will travel to Nagoya on November 3, Osaka on November 12, and Tokyo from November 25 to 26.

In line with its professed goal to bring gaming to new audiences, the company also released a series of video clips under the heading "Wii Experience," showing individuals and couples from countries throughout the world trying various Wii Sports titles for the first time.

  • Nonexistent Consoles Crop Up on eBay

    [ps3]

Yesterday's one-day PS3 preorder rush at EB and GameStop retail locations apparently turned out rather like a console launch itself, with many gamers lining up for hours waiting for stores to open and begin accepting reservations for the upcoming console. Of course, following such shenanigans, numerous PS3 eBay listings have popped up, promising bidders the chance to be the first with Sony's next-gen console for the low low price of two to ten times the suggested retail value. At time of writing, "Buy it Now" prices start at $1,200, and some auctions run as high as $5,000 for a minimum starting bid. Many PS3 auctions have already been won.

PlayStation 3 goes on sale in North America on November 17, at $499 for a 20GB hard drive model and $599 for a 60GB hard drive model. Sony expects to ship only 400,000 units to North America, which is likely a strong factor in the high reseller asking prices.

  • Sony to Publish 100 PS3 Games

    [ps3]

Speaking to Japanese publication Famitsu, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios head Phil Harrison stated that, across Sony's various Worldwide Studios, the company currently has some 190 games in development for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PSP. Of these, a surprising 100 are in development for PlayStation 3, representing an enormous amount of output for the system from a single publisher. Sadly, Harrison stopped short of listing each game.

Various other games are targeting 1080p as well, including PS3 launch title Insomniac's Resistance: Fall of Man, but the six listed above are those that are currently confirmed for the resolution.

  • Sony Confirms PS3 Price Drop as Japan Only

    [ps2]

Yesterday during a post-keynote question and answer session at the Tokyo Game Show, Sony Computer Entertainment revealed that in Japan, the 20GB PlayStation 3 model will be priced at 49,980 yen ($427.11) rather than the originally stated 59,800 yen ($511.02). Today, the company confirmed that this pre-launch price cut is indeed only for the Japanese market. However, it did also reconfirm that the addition of HDMI to the lower-end PS3 model is a worldwide change.

    [ps3]

The existence of Team NINJA's Ninja Gaiden Sigma for PlayStation 3 has been reported by various Japanese sources in recent days and was included in Sony's official PS2 lineup released during TGS, but now Japanese publication Famitsu has outlined the upcoming game in more detail. Ninja Gaiden Sigma will essentially be the "complete" version of Team NINJA's acclaimed Ninja Gaiden (Xbox), which was already re-released and tweaked with Ninja Gaiden Black (Xbox). Sigma adds various new features, such as improved graphics, dual wielding of weapons, and the ability to play as heroine Rachel.

Late Night Consoling (Updated)

It's the news!
  • Sony Taps Xfire for PS3 Online (Updated)

    [ps3]

Update: 1UP has updated its original story with statements from Sony Online Entertainment's Chris Kramer. Kramer clarifies the situation, stating that the Xfire deal in fact applies only to SOE's launch title Untold Legends Dark Kingdom, and not to the PlayStation Network Platform as a whole. "This proposed deal is completely separate and independent from the PlayStation Network Platform, and is something that SOE was examining specifically for Dark Kingdom," said Kramer. "More information on Xfire and Dark Kingdom will be coming soon." IGN has a similar statement from Xfire CEO Mike Cassidy, who said, "We do have future announcements. For now I can only tell you Xfire is not part of PS3's PNP."

Original story: In a Viacom conference call transcript released on August 9th, the media conglomerate revealed a particularly interesting detail about Sony's upcoming free online service for PlayStation 3, about which very little has been said. Viacom-owned Xfire, which offers a multifeatured set of communication and browsing service for online games, will be producing a version of its software for PS3. The relevant statement from Viacom's report is as follows:

Importantly, Xfire just signed a deal with Sony to create a version of their platform for the new PS3, which will now enable Xfire to extend its reach further into the huge console gaming market.

Sony has stated on numerous occasions that basic online functions such as online multiplayer, matchmaking, and messaging will be free to PS3 owners. It is likely that functions such as these will be handled by the system's Xfire implementation. Xfire on PC also includes functions such as in-game voice chat, which is almost certainly to be a basic PS3 function, and gamer profiles, which Sony is no doubt planning to include on PS3 given their success on Xbox Live.

One other possibility is that Sony may opt to include an option for Xfire's game server browing in addition to automatic matchmaking. Whereas Microsoft has strived to differentiate its Xbox console family from PCs by streamlining processes as much as possible and disallowing the use of a mouse and keyboard interface in gameplay, Sony seems to be going the opposite direction, allowing mouse and keyboard and pushing the console as a computer. This may suggest that the company would want to further entice PC gamers by including a PC-like server browser, though that is purely speculative.

1UP, which first noticed Viacom's statement, also speculates that Sony may be hoping to allow cross-platform play between PS3 and PC gamers. This is something Microsoft is also planning on leveraging as part of its upcoming Live Anywhere initiatives.

Sony had not responded to inquiries on the matter at time of writing.

  • Sony Repackages PSP

    [psp]

With seven actively supported home and portable consoles competing for consumers' dollars this holiday season, manufacturers will be looking for ways to make their systems attractive buys. Sony is making an early move in its direction with its PSP Entertainment Pack, which the company announced today. The bundle contains a black PSP system, Climax's ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails, Lords of Dogtown on UMD, and a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo. It will be available for a suggested retail price of $249.99 when it goes on sale tomorrow. Sony notes that the individual components contained in the Entertainment Pack would retail for over $300 if purchased separately.

"While the PSP system has out-sold all other next-generation gaming handhelds in the period since its launch," said SCEA senior marketing VP Peter Dille, "we expect this new offering to drive additional consumer interest and sales, particularly as the holiday shopping season approaches." - Product shot.

  • Activision Hears the Call of Sales

    [xbox360]

Activision today announced that Infinity Ward's Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 2, which was the best selling Xbox 360 launch title and continues to be its highest selling game, has become the first Xbox 360 game to reach one million sales at United States retail. "We are proud that Call of Duty 2 is the first title to sell over one million units on the Xbox 360 in the U.S." said Activision executive VP Robin Kaminsky. "Activision has made a strong commitment to develop leading franchises for the next-generation consoles and we look forward to continuing that successful strategy with our titles launching on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and the Wii this fall."

GameLife is Movin' on Up

May 03, 2006 5:46pm CST tags: Viacom, Games: PC
Free fan-produced video game review show GameLife has gained a notable amount of internet fame in recent months, possibly in part due to the casual and sometimes awkward presentation of its teenaged hosts. Now the show, which has seen three episodes so far and which focuses on reviews of video games and game peripherals, seems to be getting noticed in places other than just internet forums. Ziff-Davis Meda, which publishes gaming site 1UP.com and magazines such as Electronic Gaming World, Computer Gaming World, and Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, has signed GameLife to cover E3 and deliver reviews and interviews in a special episode of the show taped on the expo floore. However, the show's success doesn't stop there. In an announcement today, GameLife revealed that it is in talks with media giant Viacom with the possibility of producing exclusive GameLife segments for broadcast on MTV's properties, which include several TV networks and websites.
GameLife began as a fun hobby for three friends and has turned into an Internet phenomenon thanks to the popularity of online video sites such as Google Video, YouTube and Myspace.
...
"I feel like everything is about to explode," says the show's 19-year-old creator and host Andrew Rosenblum. "A few months ago we're hanging out making a show at home, now we're filming at the E3 expo and talking with MTV about doing reviews for them."

Aren't familiar with GameLife? Don't know why this is all such a big deal? Check out an episode or two, and you'll understand.

Bethesda Obtains Star Trek License

Jan 24, 2006 3:53pm CST tags: Activision, Bethesda, Viacom, Star Trek
Bethesda sends along this press release announcing that they have obtained the rights to the Star Trek license, and will be allowed to create games for all gaming consoles, handhelds and PCs. Activision previously owned the Star Trek rights, but sued Viacom back in 2003 because Paramount did not continue to exploit the franchise in the way Activision was hoping for with cancelled TV series and a lackluster movie. Bethesda already has two Star Trek games in development, with both Star Trek: Legacy and Star Trek: Tactical Assault coming out this year. Legacy is an Xbox360/PC project we mentioned a while back while Star Trek: Tactical Assault is a real-time space combat game planned for Nintendo DS and PSP.
Taking advantage of next-generation consoles, Star Trek: Legacy features dynamic three-dimensional battlefields with graphically stunning space environments filled with fully realized nebulas, wormholes, planets, and stars. With full multiplayer support, you will be able to choose from small-scale engagements to all-out war involving multiple star systems in addition to tracking stats and player rankings. Star Trek: Legacy is being developed at the studios of Mad Doc Software, creators of the highly successful and critically acclaimed Star Trek Armada II.

"Being able to work with the entire universe of this beloved series is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us," said Todd Vaughn, vice president of development for Bethesda Softworks. "We have some great ideas about where we want to go with this license and having the exclusive right to develop and publish Star Trek games across all platforms ensures that every Star Trek game will be a quality game worthy of its name."

You can check out screenshots from Star Trek: Legacy and Star Trek: Tactical Assault here on the Shack.

  • Sony to Release Some PSP Games

    [psp]

Today Sony announced its first-party holiday season lineup for its PSP console, which has taken fire for its lackluster games library since the initial launch. The games, with brief but extremely informative notes, are as follows:

Sony's MediEvil Resurrection ships September 13. Who else played MediEvil back in the PS1 days? I remember renting it one time.

Page 44's Gretzky NHL '06 ships October 4. Apparently, your team can consist entirely of Gretzky. Awesome!(?)

989 Sports' NBA 06 ships October 4. It lets you play "HORSE" too! Not with a team of Gretzky, though.

Think and Feel's The Con. It's a 3D fighting game with some gambling.

Zipper Interactive's SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo ships November 8. It has some kind of connectivity with SOCOM 3 for PS2.

Climax's Kingdom of Paradise ships November 15. It's an action RPG with customizable combos.

  • Midway Signs "Contract", 1UP Fails to Get It

    [ps2] [xbox]

Midway today put out a fake press release claiming that the publisher signed a twenty-two year exclusive contract to publish football games based on "The League". The League is the fictional sports entity created by Midway that is featured in their upcoming game, Blitz: The League. Since EA acquired exclusive NFL video game rights, Midway simply decided not to use the NFL.

However, looks like nobody bothered to tell 1UP news editor Jane Pinckard, who slams Midway after failing to understand what the press release is all about, noting that it "makes [her] go 'huh?'" She postulates that the reason EA is the biggest publisher is because they don't send out press releases like this, which makes them "competent, most definitely." The news was widely reported last month by major sites such as GameSpot (and Shacknews). Eyes like the vulture, that Pinckard.

  • Nights of War Songs

Young Italian developer KyrcStudios is working on Nights of War Song, a fantasy real-time strategy title for Nintendo DS. The game is set in an original world inspired by myths of the Middle Ages. Few details are available at this point, but the game will feature three armies, will use the stylus in the manner of the mouse in PC RTS games, and will feature online multiplayer through Nintendo's upcoming online service. The game is apparently at the demo stage, and the team is still looking for a publisher.

  • Games Industry Continues to Parody Itself

    [ps2] [xbox] [gamecube]

Continuing an apparent trend started last year, Playboy is once again putting out an issue featuring rendered models of female video game characters in the nude. Featured are characters from Blitz: The League, God of War, 50 Cent: Bulletproof, Playboy: The Mansion - Private Party (surprise), Darywatch, and Hellgate: London. Most saddeningly, though, is the inclusion of Carla Valenti, the homicide detective from Quantic Dream's soon-to-be-released Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit in Europe). While one can sort of justify nude models of the other characters, since those girls are clearly designed with, ah, particular aspects in mind, it is frustrating that such a marketing move is being made with a game that is clearly attempting to innovate and provide a unique experience, and whose main female character is for once not an overexaggerated half-nude model aimed at arousing dorky teens. Well, until now, anyway. I guess it's still the same old industry.

  • MTV Films to Make Suffering Movie

    [ps2] [xbox]

MTV Films, a subsidiary of Viacom, Inc., announced today that it acquired the film rights to Surreal Software's The Suffering (PS2, Xbox, PC). The game is a survival horror title which puts the player in the role of Torque, a death row inmate who, due to The Suffering being a video game, must kill a lot of demons. The game has an upcoming sequel, The Suffering: Ties that Bind (PS2, Xbox, PC), set for release later this month. Both are published by Midway.

Sumner Redstone, Viacom's CEO, has become an 80% majority owner of Midway, and many have speculated that he plans to reposition the publisher as a Viacom subsidiary. With all the mergers and acquisitions that have been going on lately, who can say? Nobody--unless one were God.

  • Take-Two Takes a Stock Hit

    [ps2] [xbox]

Following yesterday's earnings announcement, publisher Take-Two's share price has dropped 6.3% to $22.64. The drop rippled through the industry, with Activision down $.50/share to $21.70 and Atari and THQ each dropping $.01 to $1.38 and $22.25 respectively. Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson, however, noted that "I think you've seen most of the impact from (the hack). Other than that, I don't think the 'Grand Theft Auto' franchise as a whole was hurt by this."

Mega Man for the NES. "When you charge shot, how do you think Mega Man feels?" (submitted by mr.sleepy)

Late Night Consoling

I'm ready to make a public confession: Final Fantasy X is my all-time favorite game. I understand that of all the Final Fantasys, it has the least amount of exploration and the combat can be quite lame at times, but even with those glaring flaws, the story, characters, and presentation made up for it completely. I picked it up on a whim when it became a Greatest Hit, not expecting too much out of it, but it immediately sucked me in and for the next two weeks I spent huge chunks of my day with it. It's hard to elaborate with such little space here, but I emotionally connected with the game and when it was all over, it was pretty depressing that I wouldn't be able to see those guys anymore. Auron, by far, was the star of the story. There were so many pivotal moments throughout the game, moments that have left unforgettable memories with me, but nothing tops the epic moment where, when faced with two paths with radically different directions, Auron offers the battle cry, "Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!"
  • Politician Wants AO Rating for San Andreas

    [ps2] [xbox]

Every gamers' favorite politician (no, not Arnold), Tem Leland Yee, is once again at the forefront of a videogame political scandal. Since it was discovered that users can unlock a sex mini-game in the PC version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Yee now wants the ESRB to give the game an Adults-Only rating. "Once again, ESRB has failed our parents," he said. " Plain and simple, parents cannot trust the ESRB to rate games appropriately or the industry to look out for our children's best interests. The ESRB and the video game industry cannot police themselves and this is yet another example of why we need legislation to limit these types of games to children." The ESRB has responded by saying it will conduct a "thorough and objective investigation."

It was actually supposed to release on the original Xbox and be part of the Xbox Live launch, but it just didn't happen. No worries; Square Enix is confident FFXI will be ready for the launch of the Xbox 360.

  • Survey Says... DS pwns PSP!

    [ds] [psp]

A European market research group announced their findings on their study that tried to tap the pulse of gamers to see which new handheld they preferred. The results were a landslide in favor of the Nintendo DS. It beat out Sony's PSP in all the major categories: screen, games, quality, and value. Still, there were plenty of complaints for both handhelds; gamers don't like the huge amount of puzzle games for the DS but they also dislike the long drought of new games for the PSP. Check out the full details inside the link.

Tonight's story about Take-Two publishing SEGA's sports series at value pricing is one that really catches my interest. Forever now, gamers have been promised that the prices of games will drop. Some head-way has been made in this department, with a few titles debuting at $39.99 and the $19.99 Greatest Hits/Player's Choice/Platinum titles being successful enough that more titles are added to those line-ups. However, we have yet to see a big-name, high-quality title released at a budget price. If Take-Two's interpretation of value is $30 or less, it'll be incredibly interesting to see how gamers react to the situation where they only have two NFL titles to choose from and both of them are of roughly the same caliber. If successful, will it spark a trend or will publishers simply ignore it?
PS2 Xbox Take-Two Teams Up with SEGA
Take-Two Interactive announced today that they will co-publish and distribute the SEGA ESPN sports lineup worldwide. Even more interesting, in their press release, Take-Two President Paul Eibeler states, "We are also adding the compelling element of value pricing to this high quality line...with Sony and Microsoft not publishing sports titles this holiday season, there is a significant competitive opportunity for ESPN Videogames titles." Looks like to me if there's ever a chance for SEGA to take EA's football crown, this is it.

Viacom Takeover of Midway Likely
GameSpot is reporting tonight that Viacom CEO and Chairman Sumner Redstone is poised to purchase enough stock of Midway to take the company private and then will sell the publisher to Viacom. This idea is fueled by reports that Redstone has hired a financial advisor to assist in a possible decision to increase his stake in the common stock from 72.4% to 80%. By purchasing Midway, this will enable Viacom to become a factor in the gaming arena, since it has plenty of hot brands to take advantage of, namely MTV and Nickelodeon.
GCN Nintendo Releases New Memory Card
GamerFeed reports tonight that Nintendo has released to retailers a new memory card, quadrupling the storage to accomodate 1,019 blocks, or 8MB. There is no explanation as to why Nintendo has decided to release this new card, but one could hypothesize that some new games down the road will require a large amount of space. Either that or they caved to gamers' demands for more storage. In any case, they're available now for $29.99.
PS2 Technic Beat Coming to the US
Attention music game fans, another popular Japanese title is coming your way! Mastiff has announced they will release their hit title Technic Beat later this summer.
